Until stable enough when walking, the patient should continue using crutches at home. You should bear full weight on the operated leg at all times, and increase walking distance in accordance with your general condition. The greatest advantage of anterior approach surgery can be observed in the first few post-operative months: you will suffer less pain and have better stability. No special rehabilitation treatment is required, but to achieve full joint mobility and restore your physical abilities, physical therapy is advised.
The first follow-up appointment is scheduled three months after the surgery. Another check-up takes place after one year if needed, unless there are any complications.
The estimated lifetime of the endoprosthesis depends on the bone quality of the patient and on the use. Under normal use, the prosthesis should last for 15 to 20 years. Be careful not to fall, as this will shorten the lifetime of the implant significantly.
Metal bone implants are a good breeding ground for bacteria. It is thus advised to take antibiotics whenever you undergo a major dental procedure or suffer from any kind of festering inflammation; of course, you should only take antibiotics after consulting your general practitioner.
