Expected Results and Possible Complications

Tension-free groin hernia repair has become a routine procedure, the surgery results being good in most of the patients. Two weeks’ sick leave is recommended following the surgery. The patient should avoid increased physical activity, especially rapid movements, for two or three months after the surgery. Afterwards, only minimum limitations have to be observed.

Most of the patients who underwent groin hernia surgery will not need physiotherapy. What they do need is close monitoring of the wound-healing process by the surgeon. It is reccomended to apply oily cream and massage the scar a few times a day to help the tissue heal.

The most inconvenient complication after hernia surgery results from an injury of the testicular veins and the spermatic cord, which can lead to testicular atrophy. Neuralgic pain is also possible and in this case a revision surgery may be needed.

In 1–2% of the patients, hernia may recur. Recurrent hernias are predominantly caused by rapid movements in the early post-operative period. In such cases, a revision surgery is needed.
